Group 1
Chrysanthemum maximum 'Alaska' (left), Monarda didyma 'Bluestocking' (back), and Hemerocallis 'Swansdown' (right)
CHRYSANTHEMUM maximum 'Alaska' (Shasta Daisy)
Tall, stately white daisy with many large blossoms. Likes a sunny location with good soil. You can't have too many of them in the garden. They are excellent cut flowers and will bloom for many weeks if deadheaded (or cut for bouquets) regularly. Plant a foot apart.
MONARDA didyma 'Bluestocking' (Bee Balm)
Tall, rosy purple, spicy scented blossoms with aromatic foliage. Spreads quickly in good soil with full sun, but is more controlled in a shadier location. Appreciates good air circulation to avoid mildew (which is harmless, but unsightly). Plant at least a foot apart.
HEMEROCALLIS 'Swansdown' (Daylily)
Tall, pure yellow daylily with good bud count for long blooming period. "Hemerocallis" is Greek for "beautiful for a day', which refers to the fact that each bud blooms for one day only. But many buds on many scapes means that these lovely, pest-free, easy culture plants are in bloom for quite a long time. Will grow in almost any soil, are reliably winter hardy, and form large clumps which you can divide after a few years for many more in your garden. A choice perennial.
