Common Names
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
That's all well and good for Romeo and Juliet, but when serious gardeners talk about their plants, most try to use the botanical names instead of the common names. It strikes some non-gardeners as pretentious to do so, but it is a matter of precision. For example, 'lilies' and 'daylilies' mean the same thing to many people when, in fact a lily is a 'lilium' and a daylily is a 'hemerocallis' and never the twain shall meet! 'Golden sundrops' may refer to entirely different plants in different parts of the country, but 'oenothera' is 'oenothera' wherever you go!
But in the interest of communication, my plant list includes both the botanical and the common names for the plants and shrubs in my garden!
