Abeliophyllym distichum (White Forsythia)



This is not really a forsythia at all. The botanical name is Abeliophyllum distichum. It blooms earlier than the yellow forsythia and is very sweetly scented. Like forsythia, it can be forced to bloom inside after the buds swell in early March.

The shrub doesn't have much to recommend it after the blossoms fade, but it does look pretty in bloom against a background of evergreens!

It will grow to more than 4 feet tall, and get just as wide.  Where the arching branches touch the ground, they may eventually root to provide new shrubs.  You can encourage this by pinning them down and covering the pinned branch with didrt...
